Apple Officially Discontinues Appleworks
Macworld.co.uk reports that Apple has officially "end of life"-d their Appleworks software.
Appleworks has long been neglected, and with the release of Apple's spreadsheet application (Numbers) in iWork '08, it appears Apple has made the final step in replacing the aging productivity suite.
Appleworks was first released in 1984 for the Apple II family of computers, and the name was later resurrected and used to rename Clarisworks in 1998.

I wish iWork was called AppleWorks, actually. It has a long history.
Besides, we've been trained that "i" translates to "home" and "power" (or, now,
"pro" or anything non-"i") equals "work". So, "iWork" translates to "HomeWork" and no one likes homework, but a lot of people like Apples.
iLife makes perfect sense.

Twenty three years as a long run. I remember sitting down to an Apple IIe and playing with the word processor because the salesperson thought that it would convince me that the machine was a good choice. Of course, there wasn't a lot of on screen information before GUI systems so I was lost.
AppleWorks/ClarisWorks has served me well. I just need to convert all those documents now.

RIP. But really, it's kind of amusing to hear about Apple "discontinuing development" of AppleWorks. When was the last time it was updated, 2001?

Actually 2003, But Apple Still Sells The Box At Their Company Store...
It was just a guess without checking, but I believe the last update of any significance came right after the release of OSX 10.0 -- the carbonized version of AppleWorks. No new features, just the ability to run it without Classic. Even calling that "continued development" is being generous! Yes, Apple continued to sell it, but again, this was not development, which effectively ceased at least six years ago.

I still use Appleworks once in a while in addition to MSOffice, OpenOffice, NeoOffice and MSWorks.
