Apple Expanding Best Buy Presence With Intel Macs? [Updatedx2]

ZDNet is reporting that Best Buy retail stores are beginning to stock and promote other Intel-based Macs in addition to already-stocked Mac Minis and iPods.

Best Buy, North America's largest consumer electronics retailer, and Apple are flogging the new MacBook units, as well as the MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and iMac systems, according to Samir Bhavnani, an analyst with Current Analysis. The Mac maker has prominent displays and units available in several Best Buy stores throughout the United States, he said.

Best Buy has been selling Apple's popular iPod music players and Mac Minis for some time, but the latest move represents a major expansion of Apple's retail efforts with Best Buy, as well as those outside of its own retail stores, Bhavnani said. [...] The move also shows that Apple is very confident about the inventory situation regarding its new Intel-based products, he said.

Best Buy originally began carrying Mac Mini's in its retail stores last year.

Update: While Best Buy's website does indeed show that Apple's laptops and consumer desktops are "Available at most stores", this label appears to be misleading as most stores outside of California do not appear to have stock of the machines (yet?).

Update 2: News.com has posted a photo gallery of a Best Buy store that is stocking and prominantly displaying Apple's complete lineup. Of note, a PowerMac is also among the display models, but was not reported to be among the latest initiative at the retail stores.

This is good. As always, the more places selling Macs, means the more places where people can see them, and the more people buy, and market share goes up.

I will still go to an Apple Store though, although a Best Buy is right near me, I would rather go to the Apple Cube.

Here we go again. I remember this happening when the Mac Mini came out. After a few months the phenomenon died out leaving random components left in store. It was very sad to see. The Best Buy employees didn't know a thing about the machines.

Yes, I know what you mean. However, the iMac is much more attractive and eye-catching. It will hold it's own on any shelf.

I think this is great news.

Yeah, I just hope it works a little better this time around. The $699 Mini bundles some stores were sporting were easily passed over by $399 eMachines + CRT.

first best buy opened in canada about 2 years ago or so. there were big queues of people and big discounts for one day, then everything went back to normal: no choice unless you select one of the 5 brands of electronics they carry. to have apple, a high-end computer manufacturer in such a low-end shoppe is a bit dysmal. best buy has this stigma of being a garage-sale of sorts, excpet minus the unique selection. great for market i guess, but terrible for image.

I asked a Best Buy employee a simple question regarding a cable and was met with a blank stare.

Mac mini's what? You either left out a noun or there's an extra apostrophe there. Just saying.

LOL, I totally missed that. Good call's. :D
