iTunes: Lord of the Rings CD-Rs

As reported by the LA Times, Apple and Time Warner have started offering specially designed Lord of the Rings CD-Rs.

These limited edition blank CDs are specifically designed for users purchasing the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King soundtrack from Apple's iTunes Music Store.

This marks a bit of a shift in mentality from record labels, by promoting the use of CD-Rs and "burning" songs, which have been partially blamed for declining in-store CD sales:

"We want to adapt to the consumer habit," said Robin Bechtel, chief of new media for Warner Bros. Records and Reprise Records. "For a while, this has been the next logical step."

that's kind of a lot, when you're talking about cd-r's. I bet they'll make a killing with this.

I think this idea has legs.

Imagine going to Best Buy (or other music store), going up to a kiosk, signing into your iTunes account, purchasing a CD, then letting the machine spit out your cd with the label for an extra $2. A little cheaper than a CD, but Best Buy would make a bit more money (so would the record labels) because they would no longer have to ship the CDs.

This is an interesting idea. However, it's not something that I'd order online. I'd want to get it at a store for less. $5 for a CD-R seems a bit much. $3 sounds more my speed for a special disc.

Maybe they should bundle these with the DVD release...

Or, if you download the soundtrack from iTunes, add the CD-R for $2.99 + shipping...

I like this concept, but I'm not entirely sure how to make it work as seamlessly as I feel that it needs to work.

What a fantastic idea. I've just been looking at compilations from certain labels (like Crank and Saddle Creek), and was just thinking that you could get special labelled, limited edition CDRs from your favourite record labels as part of this concept.

It's very pleasing to see something forward-thinking coming from the record industry.

Now, this could actually mean the introduction of CD-burning in-store. You buy the CD-R, put it in a burner by the counter that automatically detects the CD and downloads the files to the disc via high-speed internet connection.

Next step might be empty CD-R´s with no graphics that are being burnt and decorated while-u-wait. This would keep costs down to a minimum.

Oh, joy!
