Netscape 6: Sherlock Support?

Thursday April 6, 2000 5:35 pm PDT by
MacOS Rumors posted some user feedback about Sherlock support in Netscape 6 (preview release) for all platforms. Netscape 6 is the new open-source (Mozilla) based browser from Netscape. Cross platform portability is one of the big advantages of this browser, and if they do support Sherlock files, may bring some great features to other platforms. But is Apple aware and do they endorse this...

Overheard on Slashdot: Mac OS X for Intel?

Thursday April 6, 2000 12:14 pm PDT by
If you read SlashDot's Darwin 1.0 post, you'll see a short comment claiming: Apple actually purchased 30-40 Intel boxes from a custom computer retail outfit in Iowa with some suggested intentions of creating some sort of direct competition with Windoze. Sounds interesting to me. Anonymous posts on public bulletin boards are not the most reliable sources of information... but hey, ...

Windows upcoming Pocket PC OS

Wednesday April 5, 2000 9:18 pm PDT by
After the less than stellar success of WinCE (as compared to the Palm's popularity), Microsoft is revamping their handheld OS with the upcoming Pocket PC OS (codename: Rapier). For some reason, users did not seem to like the idea of placing a Desktop-OS onto handheld screen.[heavy sarcasm] When WinCE came out, Newton and Palm users were in agreement about WinCE... that it was...

The upgrade instructions provide some pictures which show that the Airport simply has a Lucent PCMCIA card in it, which can easily be swapped out. Pretty easy hack for those worried that They are listening....

Speed bumped iMac?

Tuesday April 4, 2000 3:37 pm PDT by
This one short tidbit reported by MacOSRumors -- They claim to have heard reports of an "Apple Event" later this month, with likely iMac speedbump. Last iMac introduction was in October, 1999 which brings to 6 months later. Perhaps a bit early for an iMac introduction, but we'll...

Possible PDA-killer of the Future

Tuesday April 4, 2000 6:33 am PDT by
While PDA's are just starting to become common-place, BT.com may have the next step in the evolution -- The Smart Quill. This appears just to be in the concept stage, so don't get out your wallets just yet. The concept though, is impressive. Instead of limiting yourself to writing on a special touch sensitive screen, the Smart Quill uses spatial sensors, by the way of accelerometers which...

Dual headed Video Card

Tuesday April 4, 2000 2:14 am PDT by
xlr8yourmac has posted an spec sheet for an upcoming Dual Monitor Matrox G400 Max Graphics Card from Promax. It's an AGP card so only Sawtooth owners need apply. But, the advantage to this card is clear... with only 3 PCI and 1 AGP slot on your Sawtooth, you must choose your expansion cards wisely. By getting a 2 headed video card, you can run your 2 monitors and still have 3 slots ...

PowerPC speedup by mid-2001?

Monday April 3, 2000 10:42 am PDT by
IBM announced a new technique for increasing processor speeds up to 30%. The new insulating material is known as "low-k dielectric" and according to John Kelly, general manager of IBM's Microelectronics Division "Along with the move from aluminum to copper to improve chip wiring, we believe this will help IBM maintain a one- to two-year lead over the rest of the industry." That's great...

The real Pismo Enclosures

Monday April 3, 2000 9:04 am PDT by
Apple Insider has posted a small headsup regarding future powerbook encasings. They claim that the recently introduced Pismo was intended to have different casings, but had to be scraped due to technical issues. No real details offered yet, but it's certainly a safe bet that Apple will eventually be redesigning the Powerbook models to fit better into their product...

If you've been hurting for space in your new G4 and don't mind absolutely voiding the warranty of your brand new G4, an

BeOS 5.0

Saturday April 1, 2000 6:39 am PST by
As many of you may know, Be.com released their 5.0 version of BeOS. BeOS was considered to be one of the (if not THE) top contenders when Apple was shopping around to buy a new OS. NeXT surprised everyone when they were bought/chosen to be the core of what we now know as MacOS X. Since that time, Be has been unable to support the newer G3/G4 PowerMacs, and nothing changes ...

iPad? A full mac?

Saturday April 1, 2000 6:34 am PST by
MacOS Rumors posted a blurb about the future direction of the rumors iPad. This name has been used to describe the rumored Apple/Palm handheld. Talk of this has sprung up since Jobs killed the newly spun-off Newton Division. But the latest word from MacOSRumors sounds so implausible that I would think it was an early April Fools joke. The buzz is that instead of an Apple/Palm...

Wearable Display

Friday March 31, 2000 1:28 am PST by
While we're on the topic of cool geektoys many of us can't afford... it'd be worth taking a look at Xybernaut/Microvision's wearable display. PCWorld has an article about this new technology. Wearable computers have been around for a while, but what's interesting here is the display technology itself. This display uses "a low power laser to 'paint' a full-color high-resolution image...

Monitorless iMac

Thursday March 30, 2000 3:16 pm PST by
This update from MacOSrumors who posted a rumor about a possible monitor-less entry level Mac. Speculated pricing at $699, this could potentially give users some flexability in configuration by adding their own monitor to the system. I personally doubt Apple can shave so much off of the price just by the monitor alone. As well, such a config would certainly hurt full-blown iMac sales. ...
