iCloud+ Is Starting to Look Like Apple's Paid AI Tier

iCloud+ has traditionally been something you paid a few dollars a month for so your iPhone would stop nagging you about storage limits. But with iOS 27, Apple appears to be giving it a second job.

iCloud General Feature Redux
Several of the new Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27 run on what Apple calls "powerful server models," and those come with daily usage caps. Everyone is set to get access, but iCloud+ subscribers will just get more of it. Image generation is the clearest example Apple has offered so far, so if you spend a lot of time in Image Playground (which is a lot better in iOS 27 than previous versions) then the gap between tiers will likely quickly start to show.

Apple is adding a new Home app benefit too, with paid tiers expected to open up AI features for compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras, such as generated clip descriptions and searchable footage.

Apple hasn't spelled out all the details yet, but analysts are already reading a deliberate strategy into its approach. Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani, for instance, has called the usage limits a potential "monetization lever," and has suggested that Apple could fold more AI features into iCloud+ or its catch-all Apple One subscription down the line, turning everyday AI use into another path to the company's lucrative services revenue.

iCloud+ originally started life as a storage plan, but it's since moved on to include things like Private Relay, Hide My Email, and custom email domains. iOS 27 looks to be taking things a step further, with a version of iCloud+ that's more like an AI plan that just happens to come with storage. We should learn more before September, when iOS 27 is expected to get its general release.
