RadioShack To Sell iPhone

In a brief press release today, RadioShack announced that it will begin selling the iPhone starting with the Dallas-Fort Worth and New York City markets later this month. RadioShack plans to sell the iPhone across the U.S. in 2010.

"As part of its ongoing mobility strategy, RadioShack is pleased to announce that it will introduce Apple's iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a limited number of company-owned stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth and New York City metropolitan areas beginning later this month. RadioShack expects to introduce iPhone in stores nationwide in 2010. For more information about exact store locations and product availability, visit www.radioshack.com. Last year The Boy Genius Report reported that Best Buy and Radio Shack would begin selling the iPhone. Best Buy began selling the iPhone in September 2008.

To answer what a lot you expect, there are two types of Radio Shack stores. The crappy ones run by franchise holders and the ones owned by corporate that very good, have trained sales crew and is more interested than pushing extended warranties.

My guess is that this is a dry run to get the Verizon phones out to other retailers. I keep on wondering when we will see iPhones being sold with pre-paid plans. I heard that Virgin has wanted to sell the iPhone for over a year now.

I work at Radio Shack in the DFW area and CFreymarc makes a good point and possibly the best point. The store I work at is corporate owned and not trashy and low maintance. We don't "all" concentrate on pushing a buyer but were also no different than a wallmart or best buy, we assume the sell and do our job. The new name The Shack is very stupid even in my opinion. Other than that the stories some of you guys are saying is idiotic, not everyone working at a radio shack is ignorant, alot of us do know alot about the electronic world. Those who go to stores and notice associates not knowing what they're talking about is most likely that there manager is not doing a good job hiring, or that the district manager doesn't take his job serious. Our group of stores in our district does it's job and were ready and we will be ready to sell the iPhone. Radio shack isn't going anywhere anytime soon, I promise that. It may not be what you want to hear but it's the truth.

wonder if there will be any employee discount? I highly doubt it. how much does the store make for each phone sold? 10 bucks?

It's difficult to find various electrodes, capacitors, transistors &c there anymore. So I don't see the point in going to them.

Unless you like the cheapest built consumer products at mid level grade product prices.

Now if they were offering unlocked and jailbroken iPhones...;)

Every time I go into Radio Shack for an electronic part or some gadget they never have it. Now they want to be a cell phone store. If they are going to start selling Apple products or be another AT&T store they will be just like everyone else. I don't know how they stay in business. Why doesn't Microsoft take them over and turn them into MS stores? At least it would be a more interesting experience that looking at a bunch of phones.
