More storage from Seagate

Friday March 24, 2000 4:06 am PST by
Seagate announced it was able to double it's previous storage density for making 60gig 3.5 discs/platters possible. If you haven't noticed, hard drive prices/sizes have been on the decline... recently, you've been able to get 20+ gig IDE drives for $200+. Now, if only battery manufacturers could follow suit. Battery density still seems to be one of the limiting factors in portable computer...

Napster for all kinds of software

Thursday March 23, 2000 1:26 pm PST by
Wrapster, which modifies the PC Napster into a tool to transfer/trade any type of file with the ease of Napster. This is something we knew was coming, and even hinted at by Napster's creator. (though Wrapster is a 3rd party app). Mac users should be aware of the Macster port for MP3's, and there is no Mac version of Wrapster (yet). Good, bad, who knows... it certainly makes for an...

New Airport - A Month Away?

Wednesday March 22, 2000 9:03 pm PST by
Tyler writes "I was speaking with a friend of mine that runs the computer department of London Drugs here in Canada (London Drugs is just like Target in the US), and told him that I would be coming in to purchase an airport base station for my iBook. He told me that I shouldn't buy one because Apple is releasing a new and improved airport in a matter of a month or so. I asked him...

HardOCP posted their visit to 3dfx for a preview of the newest Voodoo technology. Full Screen Anti Aliasing (FSAA) was primarily demoed. "The Falcon flight sim was simply AMAZING with the FSAA turned on. The planes themselves damn near looked liked filmed footage. The landscape you were flying over was also brought into realistic detail with the...

Macs to Return to Circuit City

Wednesday March 22, 2000 12:01 am PST by
AppleInsider posted an update regarding Apple's return to Circuit City stores. While more exposure for Apple is always a welcome addition, especially for the unconverted masses, I'm certain the sales staff/displays will get less-than-stellar reviews from the hardcore-Mac folk. Incidentally, CompUSA is actually moving towards a larger web sales presence. ...

Tax credit for rural broadband

Tuesday March 21, 2000 11:49 pm PST by
Tax credit may be given to companies providing broadband in rural areas. These incentives will help out providing fast internet access to those of you out there in... well, less populated areas. Once you move up to broadband/cable/adsl, it's hard to move...

Apple Customer Support Humor Audio Clips

Tuesday March 21, 2000 12:42 am PST by
As anyone who's worked in tech support knows, support calls aren't always the most rewarding experiences... :) A friend sent us some MP3's which claim to have authentic audio recordings from Apple's Tech Support line. Really funny stuff. Here are a couple of clips which we particularly enjoyed: File #1: Floppies are unimportant (308k) File #2: Who runs Apple? (104k)...

Monday March 20, 2000 9:19 pm PST by
MacOSRumors posted a tidbit about 700mhz G4e's being prototyped. These "e" processors are supposed to be the faster revision of the g4 processor (similiar to the 604 vs 604e). MacOSRumors details the potential features, including a Level 3 cache. ...

Software Pirate gets 2 1/2 years in jail...

Monday March 20, 2000 3:09 am PST by
Taking a hard stance on piracy... Florida State Circuit Court sentenced David Pugh for trafficking pirated software. Mr Pugh sold pirated software over the internet. 2 1/2 years in jail - while that sucks, he's also prohibited from owning or having computers in his place of residence. Now, that...

Napster, Macster, Rapster

Monday March 20, 2000 12:08 am PST by
There's a new Macster Preview 3.5 - the Mac version of the popular Naster client. There also appears to be a new contender... Rapster is another port and is at Beta 6. While we can't complain, we haven't yet explored the details of each client. Anyone used both of them...

Sunday March 19, 2000 11:35 pm PST by
CNET posted their week in review which touched on some interested developments in the streaming media department. Apparently, RealNetworks licensed the rights to use MS's Windows Media. The result may be a consolidation of standards... but where does that leave Apple/Quicktime? ...

iBook system "hack"

Sunday March 19, 2000 11:30 pm PST by
While not quite what I'd consider a "hack", it turns out to be a very useful modification anyway... Macmilitia posted this article which describes resediting your system file to convert that oddly placed enter key into a command key. If you've ever used an iBook, you can appreciate the advantages associated with it. ...

OS X for Intel?

Wednesday March 15, 2000 2:55 pm PST by
MacOSRumors posted an interesting blurb hinting at a MacOS X for Intel. For the loyal users who have been following this for a while - this isn't a new idea. NextStep was originally available for Intel and, in fact, ported ot Mac as one of the original steps. The beauty of NextStep/OSX as a development environment and the potential for Apple was this: write once, deploy everywhere. ...
