Friday August 3, 2001 10:47 pm PDT by
Railhead Design has some info and comments about some of the more significant upcoming OS X titles -- including Office 10 and Carbon Photoshop. As for when we will see the OS X version of Photoshop, it will probably and officially be next year when were due for a Photoshop update to version 7.0. And, of course, expect to pay $149.00 for it but this will simply be the cost of the whole...

Be Buyout...

Friday August 3, 2001 9:57 pm PDT by
It seems life has gone full circle. When Apple was shopping for a new OS, Be was everyone's favorite choice... well, everyone except Apple. Be's been in some financial difficulty, as well as a change in their focus (to an appliance OS)... Now, The Register reports that Be has found itself a buyer: Be's close relationship with Sony, the product of much speculation over the last six ...

Clear G4 Case...

Friday August 3, 2001 3:49 pm PDT by
One person was selling a Clear G4 Tower case on eBay... the auction has since ended... but the pictures are still up. Frequently, manufacturers mold prototype plastics in clear (transparent) plastic for design considerations. The most popular "clear" Apple product previously was the Clear Newton 110 - a limited edition clear cased Newton. ...

OS X Shipping... When?

Sunday July 29, 2001 12:21 am PDT by
Not even quite a rumor - but perhaps "overheard", this article (seen on AppleTurns) writes: Apple's new OS X operating system is available now, but Apple tells us not to expect the company to sell computers that boot directly into OS X until around April 2002. Hmmm... well, if true, that would be unwelcome news... but it's still not clear...

Alternative PPC System?

Saturday July 28, 2001 9:55 pm PDT by
Over the years, there's been much talk about the rebirth of the Amiga OS. There was the whole Gateway sidetrack... but it seems a new Amiga OS system might come into being... A company named Merlancia is releasing these PPC Amiga OS based systems (slated for Nov 2001). What's interesting is that they plan on providing support for multiple OS's: Working together on the iFusion...

Multiprocessing OS X Game

Friday July 27, 2001 10:02 pm PDT by
As you might have seen, Quake 3 is one of the games which actually takes advantage of multiprocessors... allowing it to run significantly faster on the dual Macs. Here's some more interesting info: In a MacWorld UK interview with Omnigroup founder Wil Shipley: [Giants] Citizen Kabuto the game recently ported to OS X by the Omni Group: "It was originally written in Direct3D, ...

SuperDrive is a DVD-RW as well

Thursday July 26, 2001 8:16 pm PDT by
According to a MacinTouch reader, Apple's SuperDrive can also be used to write DVD-RW media: At last, Data back up on SuperDrives. I just received my first pack of DVD-RW disks to try on my G4 733 and I have to report they write data like a hot knife through a butter, a whole 4.7 gigs no proble A nice added feature for the $250 option (above a DVD/CD-R) on the new...

Cube Rumors

Thursday July 26, 2001 3:39 am PDT by
In what I would classify in the unlikely rumor category, Cube-Zone has posted a rumor claiming that the Cube was discontinued due to heat-issues with higher processors: He also said that he knows that Apple is redesigning the Cube to counteract the particular problems that are known. He said we might see the Cube return within in the year. Of course, poor sales seems to be...

Wednesday July 25, 2001 6:49 pm PDT by

Flat CRTs?

Wednesday July 25, 2001 5:12 am PDT by
Seen on Slashdot.org, this brief article in InformationWeek discusses a new Flat-panel CRT technology in the works: IBM scientists in Scotland have patented a way to make a color CRT that's 2 centimeters thick-and IBM says it's cheaper and easier to make these flat-panel CRTs than LCDs. Short on details and time-frame... this sort of technology could certainly bring...

Quicksilver Benchmarks, etc.

Tuesday July 24, 2001 10:59 am PDT by
xlr8yourmac.com has posted a few benchmarks sent in by users of both a G4 733 and 867. Not in-depth and extensive, but an interesting quick look. In short--the missing L3 cache on the 733 does not seem to hit its performance too significantly (vs. the "old" G4 733 w/ 1MB L3). Also, some interesting snippits about ...

iPhoto?

Tuesday July 24, 2001 2:03 am PDT by
MacEdition posted an article in their annoying MacTheKnife-esque style regarding a rumor of an Apple branded Photo editing app: the new package, tentatively dubbed iPhoto, will let Auntie Em and Uncle Henry modify and enhance their snaps with simple controls and create electronic greeting cards, calendars and other personalized cheesecake via an assortment of templates. ...

For those of you who don't mind mucking around with your brand new PowerMac, there is already a page which shows how to overclock your Quicksilver G4 to up to 1066mhz. New G4's: Other Improvements

Monday July 23, 2001 12:05 am PDT by
This eWeek article provides some interesting details that weren't mentioned at MacWorld regarding the new G4 Towers. Of note, it seems there have been slight changes to the motherboard: the replacement of certain bridge chips should boost top throughput along the PCI bus to a maximum of 215M bps, almost twice the previous rate, representatives said. As well, "the...
