Apple today during its WWDC 2022 keynote announced that the first betas of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16 will be available to developers starting today, and the first public betas of both updates will be released in July.

Apple did not outline a specific day in July when the public betas will become available.

Those interested in installing the developer betas on their devices can sign up for an Apple Developer Program membership, which costs $99 per year in the United States. Those who do not want to register as a developer can join Apple's free Beta Software Program for access to the public betas when released in July.

iOS 16 is compatible with the iPhone 8 and newer, while watchOS 9 is compatible with the Apple Watch Series 4 and newer. iPadOS 16 is compatible with the iPad (5th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), and all iPad Pro models, and here is a macOS Ventura compatibility list. tvOS 16 is compatible with all Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models.

Dropping the iPhone 7 is an interesting move, it still performs incredibly well.

July, for the first beta? Apples schedule is really slipping these days.

Even today’s Monterey feels like a beta that never quite finished it’s QA process and never got polished for release. Super glitchy and inconsistent system preferences UIs, convoluted notifications system, glitchy menu bar, ancient tabs UI in Safari after the new one got rolled back, etc.

Hopefully things will improve with developers back in the office?
First public beta. That’s the same timeframe as usual.

They used to release the first beta during WWDC.
And they did so this year too. The first developer beta, that is. The first public beta is usually out in July with developer beta 3.

Dropping new OS support for a phone while it still performs well is the right move, in my opinion. Far better than forcing them to the newest OS with performance issues on that hardware.

I remember what iOS 7 did to the iPhone 4. They basically stole my phone.

iOS 16 is not that big of a change, no new iPhone etc.

My guess is that all of the apps will work fine, it’s a fine tune of iOS 15 ;)
New iPhones come later this year (like every year).
