Telegram Update Adds Custom Notification Sounds and New Chat Muting Options

Telegram Messenger has released a new update for iPhone and iPad that lets users set a custom sound for notifications, in addition to a number of other new features.

Following the update, custom alert tones can be created in the app from short audio files and voice messages that are under five seconds and up to 300KB in size.

Multiple custom alerts can be created and assigned to individual chats or entire groups of chats, and Telegram has set up its own Notification Sounds channel with some samples to get users started.

For those who don't want to be constantly inundated by notifications, this update also introduces custom mute durations. Telegram users have long been able to temporarily mute chats for pre-defined durations, but now it's also possible to pause notifications for a specific custom duration.

Each chat has been given a streamlined menu for modifying alerts, where users can choose Disable Sound to receive notifications silently, or one of the Mute options to turn off notifications completely.

Elsewhere in this update, Telegram has improved in-app message translation in iOS, added a new interface for changing phone numbers, and thrown in more animated emoji including a "Food that moves" category.

Further details about other more nuanced changes and improvements to the Telegram interface can be found on the developers' blog. Telegram version 8.7 is available now on the App Store for ‌iPhone‌ and ‌‌iPad‌‌.

That's a 2021 MBP in the picture.
And a 90's reference everywhere else.

If it was current, it'd be a dog with an afro spitting bars at the mic and perhaps a turntable instead of a guitar in the background.

It's because Telegram don't use end-to-end encryption by default. You need to create a secret chat but most people don't bother to use and it won't sync with the other sessions. If you created one in your phone, you won't be able to see the messages in your desktop.

They offer a almost-perfect service though. It's a shame that they removed an entry in their FAQ about never using ads. Just like Signal, running the servers for hundreds of millions get expensive and they need to monetize somehow.
Long ago Nokia on their S60 devices had a net chat app that was encrypted end to end that YOU hosted on your phone , no servers. Think of LAMP on OS X but directly on the phone.

No need to monetize, no servers to take down or rely on. messages don’t go through if you closed your app. Messages sent would remain pending until the recipient launched their app on their phone.
