Logic Pro X and MainStage Updated With Alchemy Integration From Recent Acquisition

Early this year, Apple acquired popular music plug-in and effect maker Camel Audio, largely known for its Alchemy software, which bundled a range of plug-ins, synthesizers, effects, and sound libraries. Alchemy's powerful audio manipulation tools have now been built into Apple's own music software, Logic Pro X and MainStage 3, via updates that are available today.

Described by Apple as "the ultimate sample manipulation synthesizer," Alchemy introduces additive, spectral, formant, granular, sampler, and virtual analog sound generators, along with 3,000 presets for electronic music ranging from electronic dance to hip hop and rock.

Up to four synth modules can be combined to create multi-layered sounds, and there are 100 modulation sources that can be used to create dynamic instruments. The full release notes for Logic Pro X are below:

I paid $200 for Logic as soon as it was available in the app store.

Yet I feel like a thief with all these free updates over the years.

Free? That's a bit ridiculous considering GarageBand is basically a free slimmed down version of Logic already. I do think $200 is a bit high, and based more on the pricing of other daws today.

Look into the education pricing.
You think $200 is high? It's one of the cheapest DAWs out there. It's cheaper than many plugins.

I don't understand the negative comments on this one? I've tinkered around with music software on computers for at least 15-20 years now and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better value than what you get for $200 with Logic Pro X.

(In fact, I assume Apple makes it such a good value largely to guarantee Macs retain their position as the "preferred" machine of musicians and recording folks. There's a lot of pressure to go with a Windows platform for this kind of work, especially when some of the software out there has no Mac version. In the past, you saw this with programs like ACID Pro and FruityLoops, for loop-based music-making. All the Mac really had to counter it was Apple's "Soundtrack" software, which was primarily sold only as part of the Final Cut Studio bundle and eventually phased out. More recently, it's seen especially with the useful but more obscure freeware or shareware packages people put out to work with specific music synthesizers/workstations or other gear. They'll often write them using something like Visual BASIC in Windows and have no clue how to port to the Mac.)

At the same time though, the Mac has always had ProTools in its camp for hard disk recording. (Arguably NOT the best choice these days, but has a strong following of experts familiar with using it who'd rather not learn something new.) And with many of the other "name brand" packages like Reason available for either PC or Mac, Logic helps push it over the edge as the better choice, especially with the overall ease of setup. (No hassling with installing various versions of "low latency" drivers and carefully configuring Windows startups so you don't run into issues.)
