New T-Mobile Family Plan Offers Four Lines With 10 GB of Data Each at $120

T-Mobile today announced an addition to its Un-carrier line of customer perks with a new family plan aimed at providing each member of the family with 10GB of 4G LTE data per person. The base plan includes the first two family members with 10GB each at $100, and additional members coming in at $20 per person, with every line getting the usual unlimited data, talk, text, and all the normal Un-carrier perks.

Users who are interested in signing up or switching before Labor Day can get the fourth member's line free if they sign up before the holiday, on September 7. So a four-person family can each get 10GB of data for $120 -- or $30 a person -- while the promotion runs.

T-Mobile compares its plan to something similar offered by Verizon, which sees its base plan requiring families to share 10GB of data each month at a price of $140. To get something more along the lines of T-Mobile's new plan, users would have to upgrade to about $360 per month on Verizon's model.
“It’s no surprise Verizon’s spent what looks to be over $100 million in just two months promoting an $80 data plan with 10GB everyone has to share. The catch is, it’s not actually an $80 plan. You can’t actually use any of that data until you pay additional ‘line access’ fees for data you’ve already bought,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile.

“So, when they say $80, they actually charge a family of four at least $140. And that’s to share 10GB. Leave it to Verizon to push a plan that gives you a pile of data you can’t use unless you fork over more in hidden fees.”

The new family plan will launch alongside the recent announcement that customers taking advantage of the Un-carrier's "Simple Choice" plans can send and receive unlimited phone calls, text messages and use 4G LTE data in Canada and Mexico at no additional cost. T-Mobile notes that every family under the Simple Choice model can choose to switch to the Un-carrier's new family plan beginning tomorrow, July 15.

Thanks T-Mobile for what you do. You help keep prices in check with other carriers. But for gods sake, stop with the gimmicks and new plans every other month. How about one simple fair pricing structure that just always is. No need to roll out new plans. When you lower prices, just pass on the savings.

They could give me 100GB and I still couldn't use it due to their bad coverage. Please T-Mobile, drop all the gimmicks and build more towers (upgrading towers to LTE doesn't help).

(European here) I hope at those prices you at least get gold plated cell towers.

I would settle for regular towers so I could actually make and receive calls :(.

Also lets be clear on something TMo... 40 GB shared is quite different from 10 GB x 4.

This seems regressive, back to the olden days of people getting charged overage fees for going over their allotment even though others on the same plan had plenty of data to spare.

(Although I do recognize that 10GB X 4 is still quite better than the competition's 10 GB shared, and for a lower price.)

Either I'm reading your quote incorrectly or you're misunderstanding the promotion. TMo's data isn't 40GB of shared. It's 10GB each. Also there are no overages. Verizon has the shared data and overages.

I know, the prices are crazy over there. Let's just say I'm window shopping, and right now, there's a half-price sale on weird.

Dear T mobile. Please put as much effort into expanding your network as you do coming up with these monthly gimmick plans. 1 mile out side of Dallas and all you get is super slow edge or no service.

Where have you been? They have put a TON of effort into expanding their network over the past 2 years. They had zero LTE a little over 2 years ago and now almost their entire network is covered with LTE. These things take time, and of course they will focus on major metro areas and converting existing 2G to LTE before expanding to new coverage areas. With LTE rollout on 2G sites nearing completion and new 700mhz spectrum being put to use (and 600mhz on the horizon), we should start seeing their footprint expand in the near future.

That being said, if you need the coverage now, then pay for it. T-Mobile is not going to touch the coverage that Verizon and AT&T has, not for a very long time. They're #1 and #2 despite being expensive for a reason - you get what you pay for. T-Mobile is an amazing value if it works for your needs. If you always get no service or 2G data where you need it then you need to switch to another provider. No use complaining about coverage while having a paperweight of a phone and paying for service you can't use. Cricket wireless is comparable in price to T-Mobile and it uses AT&T's network (downside is 4G is throttled to 8mbps), which could be a great option for you if T-Mobile isn't working where you need it to.
