Amazon Takes on iPad in New Commercial

Amazon has taken Apple head on in their latest commercial for their Kindle e-reader:

The ad, shown here, features a guy sitting poolside in a t-shirt and shorts struggling to read an e-book on a black LCD-screen device that looks an awful lot like an iPad.

Next to him, a gal in a bikini is enjoying reading on her Kindle, featuring an E Ink screen that looks so clear in the sun that she can even read with sunglasses on. She tells iPad guy shes able to read in the sun because shes got a Kindle, which cost less than her sunglasses.

The ad points out that the iPad's screen is less readable in direct sunlight as compared to the Kindles e-ink screen. While the iPad is a more fully functional device than the Kindle, it overlaps the Kindle's e-reader usage with Apple's iBooks application.

Didn't expect such an aggressive move by Amazon. Great ad, hits the spot for what they want to do.

Then again, who cares if your iPad can't be read in sunlight when you've got women as lovely as that to ogle :D

God,

It's me Rob again. I know I haven't been to confession in a long time. But I think it's time we have a talk. The iPad's screen is unbelievably glossy. Is there any way in your infinite power to have an anti-glare screen on it? It would really allow for better viewing outdoors, and it would save the world from these annoying ads. I would suggest that you might want to check with your boss, Mr. Jobs first.

I have never needed to read from my iPad in direct sunlight
Hmmm, come to think of it, I try to avoid direct sunlight with or without an iPad :o

This ad does hit the nail on the head. I was working away from home for 3 weeks in July/August and poolside reading at weekends was the order of the day.

Took my kindle and my ipad with me - ipad stayed in the hotel room safe whilst the Kindle was magnificent for reading outside.

The kindle display is magical for black&white book reading - it's fantastic for that and exactly that. Battery lasts for ever. But thats about where the advantages stop. It is slightly annoying how slow you 'flip' pages, that display has an extreme slow response time. Annoying while reading, unusable for anything else. Thing is kindles functionality is only a tiny subset of what the iPad can do - in this tiny subset it is superior (I can live with the slow display for reading) ... but the possibilities what to do with the iPad are endless. The iPad display is even in the sun not as bad as this ad makes it look like (not perfect, but good). Given how limited the use of the kindle is, it is way more expensive than an multifunctional device like the iPad -- have a kindle I still would need some additional media player, mp3 player, mobile browser, ....

Cute try, think it'll change how fast iPads are selling? Nope.

As MacDawg pointed out: It is not healthy for you to stay in direct sunlight - you will get cancer from that. Be smart and look for a shady spot - on the plus side, besides not getting cancer, you will be able to read books, browse the web, watch movies, play games, ... etc on some magical device.

The Kindle is better for reading for me as it gives me much less eye strain than the iPad.

That's a nice little shot at Apple. They are pretty flippin' bad for reading outside.

But, it's pretty much all they've got going for them feature for feature.

"$139" - that gets you no apps, no extra functionality, no nothing.
