Apple initially aimed to "wait until November" to release the iPhone Duo in the U.S. and China only, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, but it ultimately launched the device in more than 70 countries on Friday, October 23. "Apple rushed the Duo to market without enough inventory to meet demand," he said. The device currently has a January 25 delivery estimate and is hard to find in stores.

Apple allocated roughly 80% of its initial iPhone Duo inventory to its retail stores, with locations holding as few as 50 units each, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Speaking on the latest episode of his Power On podcast, Gurman, citing people very close to the device's logistics, said most customers who bought a Duo in store on day one got one by waiting in line.
Flagship stores were said to have held up to around 250 units, and Fifth Avenue was stocked unusually heavily because Apple executives attended the launch. The inventory split helps explain why pre-orders slipped to late January within minutes on October 16, while most people who queued on launch day walked away with a new phone.
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple released the iPhone Duo in October instead of November, delivering a breakthrough in the company’s ability to charge customers sooner.
“We asked ourselves: what if we could make November's arrival snappier?” said an Apple spokesperson. “By removing an entire month of waiting, we discovered October. We think you’re going to love it.”
The earlier launch strategically reaches consumers before they waste their disposable income buying Christmas presents for loved ones. “We believe your family deserves something special this holiday season,” Apple added. “Like watching you unfold your new phone.”
Powered by Apple’s revolutionary Calendar Forward™ technology (first seen by saving an hour on the Watch), the accelerated launch gives customers up to 31 additional days to make payments before the phone feels old.
Apple described the move as an environmental milestone, eliminating a month of electricty needed to post rumors while transitioning customers more quickly from perfectly functional devices.
