Apple TV 4K and HomePod Mini Price Increases 'Much More Striking' Than New Features

Daring Fireball's John Gruber shared his first impressions of the new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2 this week, and he concluded that the price increases the devices received are "much more striking" than any of the new features introduced.

Prior to receiving price increases in late June, the previous Apple TV 4K started at $129 in the U.S., while the previous HomePod mini was priced at $99. The new Apple TV and the HomePod mini 2 are priced at $299 and $149, respectively, so both devices are now significantly more expensive than they were just four months ago.

Since the new Apple TV is only available in a single configuration with 128GB of storage and an Ethernet port, it is more fair to compare it to the equivalent previous-generation 128GB model, which was initially $149 and went up to $249 in late June. This means the new model is technically only $50 more expensive, but the reality is that the minimum you can spend on a new Apple TV 4K is now $299, up significantly from $129.

The price increases stack up if you want to use a pair of HomePod mini speakers as the default audio output on an Apple TV 4K. As noted by Gruber, it now costs nearly $600 to buy all of those devices, up from nearly $350 before late June.

"At the old pre-June prices, you could buy a 128 GB Apple TV and a pair of HomePod Minis for $350 ($150 + $100 + $100)," said Gruber. "Four short months later, with today's new models, that combination would cost $600 ($300 + $150 + $150). That price difference is much more striking than any of the new and improved features in the products."

To be clear, Gruber said he still thinks the new Apple TV 4K is "worth it" to him at its current price, and he believes the HomePod mini 2's price is "reasonable." However, he acknowledges that the "general consumer market thought the old prices were too high," and now Apple has made even more price increases on top.

Apple unveils Apple TV 4K with a breathtaking leap in price

Supercharged performance. Seamless integration. Courageous pricing.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple today introduced the new Apple TV 4K, featuring powerful Apple silicon, immersive entertainment, and a stunning $299 price customers will notice long before the new features.

“We wanted to deliver something truly jaw-dropping,” said Apple’s Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of Marketing. “So we started with the receipt.”

The blazing-fast A19 chip effortlessly opens the same apps you already use, while three far-field microphones capture every whispered “three hundred dollars?” with extraordinary precision.

The deeply personal Siri AI brings intuitive, contextual intelligence to your living room. Justifying the purchase will require a future software update.

The redesigned Siri Remote features Find My, making your remote easier to locate. The value remains harder to find.

For a truly immersive experience, connect four compatible HomePods and surround yourself with additional purchases. Everything works beautifully together. Especially the charges.

The HDMI cable is sold separately, because our commitment to a seamless experience ends approximately six feet from your television.

Apple TV 4K. The most striking thing you’ll watch is your account balance.

Apple knew people were waiting for this so they just put a big price tag on it !
If I could wait for it it was a want and not a need, and these prices nudged them above where I stopped wanting them. 🤷

Just use the app your TV came with and put the money into any tier real surround sound system, which will look the same and sound better than what you'd get from Apple TV and Home Pods.

sorry, but neither of these is worth the money. $149 for a homepod mini? come on, its a tiny little speaker with hardly any bass, and siri is still a mess. and $299 for an apple tv? seriously, what exactly justifies that price? a faster chip and a few extra features most people will barely notice? lets not forget apple already raised prices back in june, and now just four months later they're squeezing customers again. an apple tv and two homepod minis for a stereo setup went from $350 to $600. thats a staggering 71% increase in just four months. for what exactly? and please dont tell me its because of memory prices. apple buys ram and storage in absolutely massive quantities, at prices most manufacturers can only dream of. how much can 8gb of ram and 128gb of storage really cost them? certainly not enough to justify this kind of increase. and gruber still thinks these prices are reasonable? thousands of people have been complaining about apple's ridiculous pricing, but apparently we're all wrong. sometimes i wonder if he'd ever seriously criticise apple or if he's simply too worried about upsetting them. apple might squeeze a few more dollars out of its customers, but the damage to its reputation as an increasingly greedy company is already done. and no reseller discount a few months down the road is going to undo that

Is it worth it to me? Absolutely not. As an owner of three ATVs that are no longer supported, I would only stomach that new price if one of them stopped working, even though all three could benefit from an upgrade. I don't want or need Apple AI on my ATV, I don't use ethernet, and I don't game, so the new price is outrageous for my use. And I could buy a soundbar for less than two Minis. Apple has nearly priced me out of most of their products.

And HomePod Minis used go on discount from £99 to £79 when offers are on; literally an impulse purchase price, at £149, it's just not worth it. When they go on offer again, then I may pick a few up, but not at the current prices.
