Apple Releases OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview 4

Osxdp4
Apple released new versions of OS X Mountain Lion to developers today. Developer Preview 4 arrives with a build number of 12A239, while OS X Server Developer Preview 5 has build number 12S254j.

The release notes do not reveal any major updates to the software, but note a few minor issues with Setup Assistant, FileVault and QuickTime screen recording. Most significantly, the release does not ask developers to focus on any specific areas for testing, suggesting Mountain Lion will indeed be ready for release next month.

Mountain Lion was covered extensively at the WWDC Keynote this morning. It will be released in July on the Mac App Store for $19.99.

I just don't want Apple to rush Mountain Lion, fix all the bugs first and release it when it's ready. And write some great drivers for the older models too please, don't focus only on your newest creations.

Users are the new beta testers. With yearly releases, I think they just assume if you want fixes you'll just upgrade to whatever new OS version they have and get some new features, as well.

To me, Lion already doesn't feel nearly as stable as Snow Leopard did, and I expect that feeling to continue into Mountain Lion.

And write some great drivers for the older models too please, don't focus only on your newest creations.

This is Apple. Abandoning older models is their MO. I don't expect them to support any special features in hardware older than a year or two. Remember their requirements for Core Image at the time of its reveal? Or the speedups to FileVault in 10.7 only possible with newer hardware? Maybe they could make things work with older hardware, but it's a waste of their development time and does not help them sell new hardware.

It's a separate installer; it won't be available to consumers until the fall.
