Apple Chipmaker TSMC Plans Price Hikes of Up to 10% in 2027

Apple's principal chipmaker TSMC plans to raise prices by as much as 10 percent starting in 2027, according to a new report from Nikkei Asia.

The Taiwan-based foundry has reportedly held talks with clients about base price increases of 5 to 10 percent, covering both mature nodes and the more advanced processes at 7-nanometers and below that Apple relies on for its A-series and M-series chips. Negotiations began in June and were finalized this month, according to the publication's sources, with the new pricing set to take effect at the start of 2027.

Customers placing additional high-performance computing orders beyond their original forecasts will face a further 10 to 15 percent premium, which could lead to some advanced chip orders costing more than 10 percent extra overall.

The increased prices are said to reflect rising costs for materials, manufacturing equipment, and construction of new overseas chip plants.

TSMC reportedly decided to delay the hikes until 2027 to give customers time to adjust after negotiations concluded. The company declined to comment on the reported prices, but told Nikkei Asia that its general market approach was "strategic, not opportunistic."

Apple is TSMC's largest customer, and the timing means higher chip costs would come in the same year that Apple is rumored to launch additional iPhone 18 models as well as its 20th anniversary iPhone models. Whether Apple absorbs the increases or passes them along to customers remains to be seen. Apple last month dramatically increased device prices across multiple product lines, which CEO Tim Cook called "unavoidable," citing the soaring cost of memory and storage chips.

Apple Reportedly Cuts iPhone 18 Pro Orders After Price Hike Dampens Demand

Friday October 9, 2026 5:23 am PDT by
Apple has asked some of its suppliers to cut production of iPhone 18 Pro components due to lower-than-expected demand, according to Nikkei Asia ($). Citing its own sources, the report claims that Apple has been more cautious about shipments since early September because of the rising cost of memory chips, leading to higher prices. Component orders for October were said to have been cut by...

RIP, MacBook Ultra

Monday October 19, 2026 9:37 am PDT by
Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

I thought that Apple said that when they have their own silicone, they will be able to cut prices of devices - they just keep on going up and up, where they are getting unaffordable for many.
I don't recall them saying that. Do you have a link?

Apple designs their silicon, but they do not manufacture it. The current issues are with foundries, not designers.

This isn't concerning. Apple has already raised prices with this in mind, I'm sure of it.

Right, Apple? Surely you won't do it again.

I went back to a traditional watch after six years, and I love it! No distractions, less anxiety about any potential notifications or someone trying to contact me. One less chip to worry about.

Not even sure why I replaced the battery on my series 5 watch (officially via Apple) a couple months ago. Oh well,
:)

That’s cool. Just solidifies my strategy to never buy a new Apple product again. 2 year old or two generation old devices from the used or refurb market for me. Until the AI madness subsides in 10-15 years buying new is for chumps and influencers. Which is a fine line looking for an even finer distinction.
This is where I’m at now. Apple price hikes have pushed me to spend a while now reevaluating my interactions with and need for technology.

Blessings to those still willing to pay for new Apple devices. I no longer care and also no longer care for their subscription services. I’m not “out” yet, but I’m out of the new device rush.
