iPhone Air is Dead

Apple's thin and light iPhone Air is not popular with consumers, and now it's unclear if Apple is going to make another one.

There were plans for a second-generation ‌iPhone Air‌ that would be released alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September 2026, but The Information says Apple has decided to delay the fall 2026 launch.

The ‌iPhone Air‌ has been selling below expectations, and Apple has scaled back production in response. Luxshare stopped making the ‌iPhone Air‌ in October, and Foxconn is expected to end production by the end of December. The suppliers have dozens of production lines for the higher-selling models like the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Apple has not been successful coming up with a fourth iPhone model to sell alongside the standard iPhone and the two Pro models. The 5.4-inch iPhone mini was a failure and was discontinued after two iterations, and the larger-sized "Plus" iPhone also didn't sell well, so Apple replaced it with the ‌iPhone Air‌.

The ‌iPhone Air‌ is priced at $999, but designing it to be so thin and light required compromise. It only has a single-lens rear camera, and a much smaller battery than other iPhone models. The ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ is just $100 more expensive, so many customers may see it as the better buy.

Apple hasn't canceled the next ‌iPhone Air‌ just yet. It could come out in spring 2027 instead of fall 2026, but it has been taken off of the fall schedule without a new release date. It's possible that Apple will redesign the ‌iPhone Air‌ before launching a new model.
