Apple's latest retail location is set to open in Kyoto, Japan at 10:00 a.m. local time on August 25, the company announced today on its Apple Japan YouTube site and on a new page for the upcoming store.

The new Kyoto store will be Apple's ninth retail store in Japan, and the first that's located in Kyoto. Apple has several other stores in Tokyo, along with locations in Osaka, Aichi, Miyagi, and Fukuoka.

As Japanese site Mac Otakara points out Apple has created a new wallpaper to celebrate the launch of the Kyoto store, which is available for download here.

Apple Kyoto is located on the first floor of the Kyoto Zero Gate building, facing the famous Shinjo Street. Kyoto Zero Game is located next to the Daimaru Kyoto department store and it is a new building that was finished in 2017.

Oh wow, this is great! The Kyoto station area is a nightmare wasteland for anyone not explicitly on their way into or out of the city — Shijo is much more what would be considered “downtown.”

Surprised they opted for Kyoto when there’s one in Osaka, but given that I live in Kyoto, you sure won’t see me complaining that it’s no longer a two-hour trip each way if I need service. I’d have just expected, like, Kanazawa to get a store before Kyoto, simply for geographical distribution reasons.

Nice to see that Apple is opening another location in central Japan. The location isn't bad (a few minutes' walk from Shijo-Karasuma station, or about 10–15 minutes' transit and walking time from Kyoto station), but Bic Camera right across from Kyoto station (https://www.biccamera.co.jp/shopguide/report/macshop/index.html) is still a more centrally-located place to look for and purchase Apple products in Kyoto, especially for people coming off and getting on the Shinkansen.
