Original Apple Watch models are available for as little as $199 depending on the model, which is a significant savings.

It should be noted that the original Apple Watch features a first-generation S1 processor and it is a good deal slower than the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 models, but if you're looking for the lowest-cost option and don't plan to use apps, B&H's deals are worth checking out.

Maybe it's just a bubble within Apple news sites, but I don't see the negative Apple comments going away anytime soon unless Apple does something meaningful to silence them.

Agreed. It's pathetic with the constant negativity. And that forum member you quoted is always hate spreading on this site. But there is a lot of useful information on this site once you weed through the pessimism.

Poor battery life, soldered everything, poor GPU, no USB-A ports, gimmicky touchbar, poor keyboard.

I'd take it, but I wouldn't use it, I'd put it up for sale.
