Apple Seeds Fourth Beta of iOS 10.1 to Developers and Public Beta Testers

Apple today seeded the fourth beta of an upcoming iOS 10 update to developers and public beta testers for testing purposes, one week after seeding the third iOS 10.1 beta and more than a month after releasing iOS 10 to the public.

Registered developers can download the new iOS 10.1 beta from the Apple Developer Center or over-the-air once the proper configuration profile is installed. Public beta testers can download the update over-the-air after installing the configuration profile from Apple's beta testing website.

iOS 10.1 introduces a new "Portrait" mode for the iPhone 7 Plus that allows it to use the two built-in cameras to create shallow depth of field portrait photos with blurred backgrounds.

To achieve the blurred look, the image signal processor in the iPhone 7 Plus uses the wide-angle camera to create a depth map, dissecting the different layers of the photo to decide what to blur. It works on people, pets, and objects, but does require good lighting to achieve the proper effect.

The update also likely includes bug fixes and other under-the-hood improvements to address issues that have been uncovered since iOS 10 was released, such as an ongoing CallKit bug that has caused CallKit to function unreliably.

iOS 10 has been described by Apple as the "biggest release ever" for iOS users, with features that include a redesigned Lock screen, a Siri SDK to allow third-party apps to integrate with Siri, and a completely overhauled Messages app with stickers, a full App Store, Digital Touch, Bubble Effects, and more.

Other features include a dedicated "Home" app for HomeKit users, new facial and object recognition capabilities in Photos, and redesigned Maps and Apple Music apps. For more details on iOS 10, make sure to check out our iOS 10 roundup.

Please please fix the safari keyboard. It bugs me that I type something, use a character like a comma, and after hitting space it doesn't switch to a letter. It stays on the punctuation keyboard. Also, safari doesn't auto scroll comment boxes when posting replies. That's not a big issue since I can just zoom out, but for some it may bother them.

Anytime I open the multitasking tray or close apps, I have a terrible lag between when I push the home button and the phone actually performing the task. My wife's 7 has no issues at all, it's very responsive. I also have the connectivity issues that this release is supposed to correct.

Do you use the triple click accessibility shortcut? If so thats what causes it, the phone is waiting to see if you are going to click the button a third time.

I downloaded the beta on my iPhone and iPad and I'm not a developer.

I am guessing this is the GM.

Not likely, why bother with 10.0.3, if 10.1 is done.

Apple used to be known for flawless software. Now they only release software with tons of bugs.

Things were never flawless. Some people had that idea because they didn't run into issues themselves or because they just heard of things, but the reality is that there have always been issues here or there for various people.

There is definitely memory leak in the OS level services.

I have been having app reset a lot more often as I keep using the phone, but eventually fixed itself when I reboot it.

Holy crap, thanks for the advice about disabling the triple-click accessibility shortcut.

I've been annoyed by the slow animation speed for a long time now. More than a year I'd say. Never thought about the fact that it's waiting for a third press and causing it to feel sluggish.

For those who want to disable it:
Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (bottom) > Unckeck all of the options that show here.
