Apple Releases QuickTime 7.6.7 for Windows

Apple today released QuickTime 7.6.7 for Windows, bringing a fix for a single security issue that could be exploited by a maliciously crafted movie file.

A stack buffer overflow exists in QuickTime's error logging. Viewing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue is addressed by disabling debug logging. This issue does not affect Mac OS X systems.

The update weighs in at 32.28 MB and requires Windows 7, Vista, or XP (SP2 or later).

Apple's own Software Update and QuickTime's own Update function fail to detect this new version. Therefore you have to manually download it from www.apple.com/quicktime.

Ugh Quicktime is terrible and needs to die. I dislike it almost as much as I disliked realplayer back in the late 90's.

Really? Quicktime is pretty amazing for professional filmmaking. The Quicktime X player sucks though.

Lucky them. QuickTime X is a joke compared to QuickTime Pro of days past.

I dont understand this hate for QuickTime X. Its designed for video 'playback'. Just like VLC or any other media player.

QUickTime 7 has never been good for me. I tried to export a widescreen video to MPEG4 and it came out as horizontally compressed 4:3.

The only reason Windows users even have Quicktime in the first place is because you can't install iTunes without that crap.

In fact, it's so crappy, I don't think it even tries to take over file associations when it's installed. Apple knows they'll just be reset anyways, so Quicktime just sits there like a vestigial limb. It's an entirely wasted 32 megabytes, whereas VLC can play a million times more formats than Quicktime and is half the size.

Oh, but Quicktime looks like brushed aluminum. Great. And it can't do fullscreen unless you pay for it. Fantastic.

Quicktime sucked on my PC a year ago. Clunky and ugly UI.

Quicktime X is nice, but needs more basic features to be useful to me. I do love the trimming action, quick and easy.

...does it fix yet another bug in Mac OS X Server's Wiki/Blog service that causes audio but not video to play back for Windows visitors?

Jeez Apple, get your QT **** together. For a company focused on media consumption, your media consumption software is really ******.
