Apple Hires Former Mozilla Security Chief

PCWorld reports that Apple has hired former Mozilla security chief Window Snyder as a Senior Product Manager in its security group.

Apple is the third browser-maker in the past five years that has employed Snyder, who previously had worked as a security strategist at Microsoft where she managed the company's relationships with security consultants and had worked on the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems.

Snyder left Mozilla in December 2008 and worked as an independent consultant until joining Apple this week. Snyder is well-known in the security community and considered an expert in threat modeling.

It's a good sign that Apple is paying attention to browser security. Did she replace somebody else or is this an addition to Apple's team?

ugh! Safari doesn't need more security, it needs more features!
Not being able to add line separators between my bookmarks is enough to make me stay with Firefox. Come on, there are plenty small features Safari could have and really compete with others

That would be nice (though I just use folders) but don’t hold your breath. For the vast majority of people (who don’t frequent tech forums), feature creep would make Safari a worse browser rather than better. (Especially when it comes to features that add UI complexity, like a divider button in the bookmark manager. “Just one more button...") Enthusiasts like you and I who enjoy technology for its own sake may not see it that way, but you can expect new Safari features of that kind to be rare and carefully-chosen.

I personally don't want Safari to get complicated. But a few more features would be nice.

Safari needs plugins. If you could get the delicious plugin I'd use safari. I use the web on too many different devices to have centralised bookmarks.

I know a fair few people with the same view.

What with Apple's abysmal security update record, this can only improve things.

Here's a solution: stay with Firefox. Problem solved. Why are you hung up on wanting to use Safari if Firefox better meets your needs?

I fail to see how hiring somebody to increase the effectiveness of Safari's security measures is a bad thing...
