No Netflix Streaming to iPhone in Near Future?

In a Q&A with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Reuters reveals that the company does not have any "short term" plans to bring video viewing and/or streaming to the iPhone and iPod touch. Netflix is instead continuing to focus its efforts on its core TV-based business and consumer electronics such as Blu-ray players and video game systems associated with that medium.

Reuters: Any plans to work in partnership with Apple and the iPhone?
Hastings: it's something that's likely to come over time. But nothing in the short term. (With) movie watching, we are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles. We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone.

Hastings' comments conflict with a relatively recent report claiming that the company would "soon offer" its streaming service, known as "Watch Instantly", on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Doesn't matter. AT&T and Apple would cripple it.

AT&T, err, I mean Apple, would likely reject it anyway because it's a good thing Netflix iPhone owners want.

If they released this I'd probably renew my Netflix subscription. Even under the assumption that it will be WiFi only.

This is zero shock to anybody who knows anything about Netflix. They just gave a $1M prize for video recommendation software. Netflix's prime interest right now is increasing the home streaming, mainly the number of videos and working toward getting newer stuff. Considering the app would obviously be WiFi only and Netflix uses Silverlight for its online streaming, it would be quite the haul to develop an app.

For all the whiners who will continue to complain about "crippling" apps like this and Sirius XM, do the mildest bit of homework. Yeah, I'd love to be able to stream anything everywhere, but the reality is nobody in the US has the network to handle all of this traffic alone. This may be possible when the iPhone opens up to others, but AT&T's 3G network would get slammed in places like NYC and San Fran if this and other bandwidth-hoggers were allowed free reign. You're probably going to have to wait on 4G to get the necessary backbone for this.

This is no great surprise. The iPhone doesn't have the security round streaming that the movie studios require (most studio contracts require RTMPE or better nowadays. There's no encrypted streaming at all to an iPhone), and Netflix very, very probably hasn't been granted rights by the studio to stream it's content to mobiles.

Same reasons Hulu isn't happening either, despite the repeated claims there.

Its taken AT&T how long to get there network up to speed for mms?

And now you want to stream Netflix to the iPhone?

This would surely cripple or maybe bring there "3G" to a stand still.

Eh.

This really doesn't interest me that much anyway....yet.

First, I'm not exactly that thrilled with Netflix's "instant watch" offerings to begin with. Out of over 100 movies in my queue at the moment, only a handful are "instant watch" -- and they're the least desirable on the list.

Second, as much as people want such an app to be 3G-capable, I just don't see streaming on a phone network working all that smoothly. And wifi is so hard to come by, except at home -- in which case why would I watch something on my phone, when I can watch it on my computer?

Third, and most important, unless there's a way to quickly download a (temporary) Netflix movie in order to watch it on the subway or on a plane, I don't see ANY other place I would likely watch something that's streamable only.

If all the above changed, I would be all over this app. (Who wouldn't?). But for now, I'm very ok with there being no plans...
