AIM for iPhone Updated, Moves to Ad-Supported and Paid Versions

AOL's AIM [App Store] has been updated to version 2.0.1, bringing several new features, as well as a change to an ad-supported model for the free edition. AOL also promises that an ad-free paid version is currently working its way through Apple's approval process and should be available soon.

Among the new features available in AIM are tools to access contacts directly from within the application, configure multiple screen names and easily switch between them, and share locations with buddies to find nearby friends. In order to work around Apple's limitations on applications running in the background AIM has also developed a system to allow users to stay logged in for up to 24 hours, even when the application is not open. Users can then receive notification of incoming messages via SMS.

In the classic words of Fake Steve; Frigtarded.

If it's going to have a text tell you that you've been IMed, why not just have it forward to your phone by setting up AIM Mobile - type in your number, and IMs get sent to you in texts.

Much much better than a message telling you to go look somewhere for a message.

Haha yah it's ghetto. It might be different if you buy the app. They probably want you to open the app to get ad rev.

If not, lame on both fronts.

You ever seen the actual aim app? It's loaded with ads. The ad isn't too invasive at all.

Have the preferences always been where they are now? It seems really confusing where it is.

Otherwise, I like that you can stay logged in for 24 hours :)

Good point, and very clever on their part if that's the case. Evil, yet clever.

So I'm definitely not going to upgrade, is there any way to get the badge off my app store? If not, I'm going to just pull AIM.app and put it in my root because my phone is Jailbroken and then my phone won't know it's installed. The new one offers me nothing usefull. Might as well use Palringo full time :(
