Apple Sales and Marketshare Up (IDC)
Echoing a previous report indicating that Apple's sales numbers and marketshare are on the rise, IDC reported that worldwide PC shipments were up by more than 17% this past quarter.
With it Apple saw a 44.6% increase year-over-year. Raising its US marketshare percentage from 3.3% to 4.3% based on IDC's numbers.
Investor's Business Daily attributes this rise in marketshare to a "halo effect" from the iPod spilling over into Macintosh sales.

Marketshare percentages are always mis-identified as platform percentages
(ie: new computers purchased vs computers actually in use)

But still only 4.3%
Do you know what this means? It means 95.7% of computer users in the world are idiots. So sad.

Yeah. I notice myself that I see a suprising number of iBooks and Powerbooks in my lectures at school. More Apple laptops than any other brand. And everyone seems to think its "cool" to buy a mac. I hope this means increased support of the platform, not just bs "photobooth".
I sure hope the pro thing on Wed. comes out with some innovative new pro-apps. Also, when is the "asteroid" going to come out? If I would have to make one stupid, no info at all claim for this wednesday about which non-"mac" product will be released onside new hi-def software and powerbooks/power macs, it would be the asteroid!

It appears that someone is tired from that broken link.
gave me quite the laugh.
Anyways... let's not start the "1st" thing on this forum. That would be horrible.

As others have pointed out, these sorts of 'market share' figures are gross underestimations of the installed base.
If you take out all the computers being sold as cash-registers, or process controllers, or other widgets (i.e. the ones not being used as 'general purpose personal computers') and then factor in the turnover differences (people replace their macs significantly less frequently than they replace their PCs, so 10 people buying PC will buy more PCs over time than 10 people buying Macs), the installed base of Macs is probably around 12-18%.
Still, it's good to see some increase in the sales figures as well.
Cheers

Every time I hear the term "iPod 'Halo' effect" I think of the game, Halo...
Those linux guys got Doom (original) ported to the iPod... I wonder if they can do that for Halo ;)
(for those who read way to seriously into forum posts, that was a joke. Halo is way to over-powered for an iPod)
