New Pepsi-iTunes Promotion? [Update 3]

So i went on a last-minute jaunt to the little mini mart across the street from my apartment, to get a diet dr. pepper, mere moments before they closed. Instead, i spy with my little eye, a diet pepsi with a yellow cap and a "1 in 3 Wins a Free Song" label. So i grab 2 of them and a king size Mounds bar, thinking nothing of it.

Meanwhile I get home, crack the bottle open and behold! A winner.
I proceed to open iTunes and redeem my song. No sign of a "click here for pepsi song" button. ok, i find a "redeem" link on the side. I click and enter my code. No dice. So I go look at iTunes.com as it says to. No dice. I search the forums, nothing.

So what's the deal? Is the retailer in the wrong for putting these on the shelf before the promo goes active? Anyone else have any info?

p.s. for the sake of argument. Yes, i do realize the irony of diet pepsi and a candy bar w/480 calories of coconut goodness.

If you wouldn't have drank that Pepsi it could probably fetch a nice price eBay either now or in the future, ;)
